What is a HEPA Air Purifier?

HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air. These filters are designed to remove 99.97% of all pollutants sized 0.3 microns or larger from the air that passes through the filter. These pollutants include tobacco smoke, household dust, animal dander, and pollen. Filtration at this level can be very helpful for those managing allergies or asthma.

How to Choose the Best HEPA Air Purifier for Your Room

1. Location/size: You should first consider the area where you will be using the HEPA air purifier.  The size of the room you wish to purify is a very important factor. Each air purifier comes with a Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR), which measure the amount of particle-free air being delivered into the room.  CADR ratings apply to the highest fan setting of each unit.

CADR is created as a measure to compare the effectiveness of air purifiers. The higher the CADR, the larger the room that can be effectively cleaned. A rule of thumb is CADR x 1.5 = sq. ft. room size.

Please note that the recommendation is based on the unit’s ability to provide 5 or 6 air changes per hour. Allergy-sufferers may need a larger unit in the same size room that can produce 8 or more air changes per hour.

Manufacturers of a HEPA air purifier may list any room size regardless of the CADR rating. You might see two products have the same CADR ratings but the room size can differ significantly. Thus, we recommend you consider the CADR ratings rather than the manufacturer’s listed room size to make your comparisons.

2. Cost: You will be able to narrow down your search if you decide on a price range.  HEPA air purifiers can very greatly in price and you must also consider if there will be additional costs such as filter replacements.  You may find that some units have a higher initial price tag, but are cheaper in the long run when durability and extra costs are considered.

3. Noise: Noise can be an issue with some HEPA air purifiers, especially when people wish to have them running in their bedrooms at night.  It is usually best if you can get a larger unit and keep it on a low setting.

4. Extra features: Many HEPA air purifiers have special features like timers, remotes, unique purifying modes, or indicator lights.  You should look for features based on your personal preferences, but I believe a timer is a nice feature to have.
